Welcome to Cultivating and Caring for Your Musical Self, brought to you by The Music Therapy Spot and Joyful Noises LLC, and pre-approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 5 Continuing Music Therapy Education (CMTE) credits!Cultivating and caring for our musical self is a lifelong process for music therapists. While many of us are drawn to the field because of our connections with music, we can lose touch with our own music as it becomes clinified during our education, clinical training, and professional practice. This CMTE opportunity will give music therapy students, interns, and professionals the opportunity to reflect upon their musical identity, as well as the role that appropriation and musical authenticity play in music and music therapy.

One way we can conceptualize and explore our musical self is by considering musical wellness as a unique domain of wellness in our modality which has an intrinsic impact on other aspects of their wellness and their clinical work. Using a model developed by presenter Beth Yoder, participants will learn how to define and assess their own musical wellness, and use that information to develop supportive musical wellbeing practices that meet their unique needs as music therapists.

Participants will then explore a variety of musical self-care practices, including both music therapy and therapeutic music, and ways to integrate these sustainably into their personal and professional practices.

When we become music therapists, we must never forget about our musical roots. By taking inspiration from well-known musicians, while addressing concepts such as musical intimacy, we can tap into our own musical resiliency. This can help us remain musically creative, both for ourselves and our clients.
